Product Description In Odin Sphere, players enact the story of their world's end. A great kingdom named Valentine was brought apart by natural disaster and internal strife. As war broke out, the once-great nation became a wasteland. As a demon lord named Odin schemes to conquer it, a far-off sorceror plans to use ancient magic that will bring an apocalypse. As the nations struggle for control, the world steadily slips unknowingly toward its demise, ancient prophecies are ready to be fulfilled -- unless a young princess named Gwendolyn can stop the bloody feud between nations and fight for unity.

| Customer Reviews: Generic Action RPG August 16, 2010 qwerty After playing countless Shin Megami Tensei games, I though, "Hey, Atlus published this, it should be good" and bought it on a whim. After playing this for an hour, it's an complete letdown. You repeat the same attack combo for every enemy, and cast some magic occasionally. The stamina bar is reminiscent of Demon's Souls, one gets punished for button mashing, but it's still a bad game overall. I'm not that long in, but the story bored me the moment this bad boy dark knight fellow just slaughtered the heroine's lackeys, and just spared the heroines live as he was holding her in his arms, his sword ready. Even after killing countless, he just spared her life and said "this battle don't need anymore bloodshed." Story reaks of genric weaboo stereotype Story is bad. Gameplay is bad. Stick with better RPGs like Demon's Souls or Persona 3 instead..
One of my favorite games to date.. February 2, 2010 pandabear I probably don't have much to say that hasn't already been said about this game. I love this game for a few reasons that I'll put in list form.
- The artwork is gorgeous! Even while being 2D, it has an interesting "circular" concept to it. (It isn't a 2D in respect to the way platformers are 2D)
- The story is so intriguing and deep. I like dialogue/extensive story in my games. If you don't, you'll probably just be bored with it.
- It requires a bit of skill or persistence...and intelligence. You have to play stages well to get helpful items, you have to be smart about your space/money/making items, and you'll probably have to play the bosses (especially the dragons) a few times before beating them.
- It has a wide range of characters and, in typical Atlus fashion, is very different from most RPGs.
That about sums it up. Atlus is a pretty obscure game company, so if you base your game decisions on advertising, popularity, etc..well...they don't operate that way. If you enjoy RPGs, it's definitely worth trying.
My only complaint with this game? Lag. I heard this on another review somewhere, where they described the game as "old-school 2D with old-school lag." If there's a lot on the screen, the game tends to be sluggish. It only happened in a few places for me, namely the underworld, where there is a mist/haze/whatever that seems to automatically make it laggy. The fight with the boss in the underworld was painful to say the least.

Odin Sphere is simply a fun and beautiful game to play. It is not perfect by all means but it accomplishes the most important factor about video games, entertaining and fun. The game is set within Norse Mythology, such as Valkyrie Profile from Square-Enix, but also deviates from its source material making it its own entity. There are iconic characters such as Odin, Valkyries, and the Aesirs but that is pretty much where the similarities end. Introduce within OS's world are Gods, Fairies, Humans, Elemental Deities, and Rabbit creatures known as pookas. The game is a side scrolling action rpg with strategic gameplay elements, so do not expect a hack and slash game. The story is long and deep letting you play five different characters, each with their own strength and weakness which also provide balance for the game, with intertwining story arcs. Odin Sphere's art and character design is amazingly beautiful, rich vibrant colors, creative characters, and wonderful voice overs whether you play in English or its original Japanese dialogue. The only down side with Odin Sphere is that it can become repetitive, especially when trying to level up and the slowdown. The slowdown can become very unbearable at times especially when you are encountering a boss, but it only occurs when there are a lot of enemies on the screen. All in all, Odin Sphere is a fun game and everyone should at least give this game a try.
wow... August 10, 2009 Madi P. Burley (Snohomish,WA USA) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
i can't get past a stage... and every time i try i die and then i have 2 start all over again... i know i should plan ahead...
Quite the mixed bag. July 21, 2009 RBM (Philadelphia, PA) I think Odin Sphere pulled a fast one on a lot of people, by disguising a familiar model of gameplay with a misleading appearance.
OS presents what looks like a mish-mash of a classic platformer (think ice world with multiple stages, a jungle world with multiple stages, etc. and each one with at least 1 mid-boss fight and a final boss fight at the end) and an old-fashioned dungeon crawl (a whole lot of fights, with occasional surfacing to visit a merchant/town.)
But behind the scenes, OS falls back on a game model many may recognize from Final Fantasy Tactics (and a host of other RPGs): OS presents plot fights which get very hard, very fast, unless the player voluntarily takes multiple breathers to re-visit old areas to beef himself up.
Kill a fan of RPGs in two hits when he's at full health, and he will leave to go beef up his character. A fan of platformers, on the other hand, will re-attempt the level until he loses patience and takes out the game.
Aside from this little masquerade, the only interesting aspect of OS which the developers brought to the table is resource management. The player is presented with many choices in this regard: seeds need phozons to blossom into health-restoring fruit, but so does your weapon to increase its power. Potions can make a big difference, but if you neglect fruit consumption, your max hit point level doesn't increase. etc., etc.
And that aspect of the game is fun. Running down the positive checklist: pretty graphics, stylish artwork/characters, plenty of spoken dialogue, and enemies which require different tactics to defeat (OS punishes players who try to button-mash their way to victory.)
The main drawback: repetitiveness. You re-visit the same areas repeatedly, as different characters. Fighting the same enemies. Managing the same resources. Fine if you enjoy the fighting. Not fine if you grow tired of it.
