| Customer Reviews: An Exciting Game September 6, 2010 Ker Thao (Saint Paul, MN USA) Rogue Galaxy is about a young boy named Jaster who embarks on a journey with space pirates and along the way, he discovers his true past. The game's combat is pretty good kind of like active time battle but it is not exactly active time battle. The story is presented well. Rogue Galaxy is a great game overall.
Rogue Galaxy, a great game. August 29, 2010 Tobias 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game is a great game it has an interesting storyline. This is a live-action RPG with a whole lot of things you can do. There are things in the game that are side quest, but are more like a side game; the bug raise side game, and the bug tournament. You should play this game.....
Level 5 Strikes Again July 15, 2010 Mithlas There are more than a few "groaners" in dialog and stretched narrative points - they mention the Star King enough times that you'd wish they'd all shut up. Still, Level 5 is known for developing slightly campy games and if you're willing to give some slack then the experience will be rewarding.
Story: 7/10
Art style uses a cell-shaded look that I think worked very well, not too gaudy and not too bland, with most of the characters and environments leaning more towards realism than the exotic. Granted, there's more than a little repetition, particularly in Zerard Prison (where you're likely to get lost more than once), but abilities are suitably flashy and the humor is well played. People familiar with Dynasty Warriors will note a...remarkable resemblance of Zegram to Xiahou Dun.
Graphics: 8/10
There's no internal control of volume leveling, and some people may not like the occasional corny line, though things are played straight more often that Level 5's Dark Cloud games. Ray guns sound suitable and blades clang acceptably.
Sound: 7.5/10
The music in both of Level 5's Dark Cloud games sounded to me like midi not far from the Super Nintendo. Fortunately, there must have been changes in staffing because I found the soundtrack pleasant. A little repetitive, especially if you grind a lot, but most areas have relatively unique music and it always seems to fit the scene.
Music: 7.5/10
Level 5 is known for delivering quality action-adventure games, and they certainly deliver yet again. Weapons can't be directly customized like in Dark Cloud, but will automatically grow with use and it's easier to synth more powerful weapons than it was in DC due to the removal of the weapon levels and Synth Points, and restorative items are easier to come by, which makes it easier to travel without having to power-level. As long as you're diligent in filling out your characters' Revelation Flowcharts, you'll have powerful abilities to get you through suitably challenging battles. Having a real party this time is also a boon, though AI-controlled members have a tendency to get themselves hurt or killed so don't hoard your money or restoratives. Minigames do provide welcome (and even better - entirely optional) diversions.
Gameplay: 8.5/10
After completing the main story mission, you'll be given the option to save "clear data" and a new dungeon (the Ghost Station) will appear. Depending on how you've been leveling characters and weapons it can either be a cakewalk or a grueling challenge, but if the first was too easy there's a 100-floor version that you can unlock after playing the first version. The items at the end aren't especially flashy (no new upper-tier weapons), but you can get some new costumes.
Replayability: 6/10
Level 5 pulls out all the stops in creating what I felt was a fairly engaging, very amusing story. All of the characters felt motivated and believable even when they were being used as comic relief. Completionists will definitely need to be careful which weapons they fuse (you'll probably have to go through multiple guides online since there are flaws in the official guides), but for more casual players it's a very simple, enjoyable experience.
Overall: 8.4/10
A MUST buy game for RPG collection. June 25, 2010 Anime Artist Gundam Fan A MUST buy game
I have no idea how I missed the debut of this awesome game when it was released in 2008.
Pros:
- A different RPG story (basically it's about pirates and treasure hunting).
- Open maps (you won't feel like you're traveling down a hallway... like FF13).
- Good amount of save points (not too much, not too little).
- Two weapons for each party member (a main weapon, and a sub weapon).
- Upgradeable weapons (by fusion or by adding a catalyst, such as an ore or crystal).
- Real-time fighting (a Warning will trigger when you encounter beasts, beasts will pop up from the ground). During battle, you can "pause" the battle to choose items, special abilities/attacks, or even switch weapons.
- Active battles (no simple one button automatic battle). If you get a game over a lot, it's because you didn't pay attention to the battle and your characters' stats.
- Unique special attack/abilities animations.
- Plenty of different special attacks for each party member.
- 8 total party members (each character has unique design, background history, and useful in battle.)
- About 5-6 different, and interesting looking costumes for each party member.
- Beautiful and detailed towns, cities, forests, beaches, maps.
- Great monster designs.
- Plenty of side quests (such as Treasure hunting, and Beast hunting).
- Helpful talking NPCs.
Possible Cons:
- Anime cel-shaded graphics (ex: Dark Cloud 2, Dragon Ball Z fighting games). If you can't stand watching anime, then you might not like it.
Overall, this game will be a great collection to your RPG collection. It's one of Sony's best (besides The Legend of Dragoon). Interesting storyline, gameplay, open maps/levels, and memorable characters. Plenty of side quests. For a dated game, the anime cel-shaded graphics still looks amazing and beautiful on a FULL 1080p HDTV.
Fun April 10, 2010 Reggie (San Diego, CA USA) I played this game last summer in 2009, and it was a lot of fun. The dungeons can be a bit repetitive, but still, it's an overall solid rpg and a lot of fun to play.
