| Customer Reviews: Awesome game but hard to play multiplayer July 27, 2010 S. Elrasoul (Orange Park, FL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Hey all this is Sam AKA Para in the gaming review community. This is one of many gaming reviews I will be starting for Amazon, so I hope you enjoy. Going to be talking about Champions Return to Arms and what I think is a great game. First off let's talk about the story, without going into too much detail; I must say the story is decent, could be better. There could have been some cut scenes that made this feel more intense but it was just a simple NPC that would talk to you. Mind you when they talked, their mouths didn't move with the words which made it feel a little cheap. I understand this is an old game but it could have looked better. The voice acting was nice though for people who hate to read or players who just want to feel like they know the character talking to them. Story could have been better like I said but it is still fun to see how it all ends.
Now for the gameplay, it was nice visually and audio wise. I loved watching the spells like fire balls explode on an enemy and with that the sounds are just amazing. Also what was amazing was the water when you walked through it and hearing the water splash around you, which was done very well. The game controls were very easy to learn to and the skill wheel was nice but at times annoying. Boss fights take some time which is a good thing if you are not dying so fast. The save points throughout the levels help a lot and I cannot stress enough to save save save and save often only because you do not want to lose everything you found and have to start all over. The way they handled the camera for single player was done well, but again gets annoying when in small places and you cannot see your character. Fun gameplay though and you won't regret it.
Now for online/multiplayer which I can say is fun to play with friends but very frustrating too. Why frustrating you might ask and that is because of the camera. I will throw this example out there and it was with me and my friend, I was trying to grab a chest while he wanted to move forward and apparently he was being attack but because I was on the other side of the camera angle he could not see the enemy and then cause the camera angle moved again he got stuck until I moved to his location which by time I moved he died. So not having split screen or being stuck on the same screen really does render the game fun if people want to move forward fast or if one players wants to go left and the other go right, just does not work. Don't let this stop you though, it is fun to play online and is very helpful to have the added players.
Overall Sony has done a great job on the series but just has minor flaws. Fun and enjoyable though and should be played.
Score out of 4.5
Concept/Story: 3*, As I said the story could have been better with maybe some cut scenes or just an overall better story outline, it was just plain.
Graphics: 5*, Much improved from the first game. The environments and characters and effects are superb.
Sound: 5*, With great graphics you must have great sound effects and they have pulled it off flawlessly. Voice acting was a +.
Entertainment Value: 4*, Fun with friends and even solo as long as you can deal with the overhead camera movement. Boss fights are great and take strategy so you are not dying foolishly.
Control: 4*, Not really hard to learn, but the skill wheel can get annoying.
Replay Value: 4*, Playing with friends is fun and fighting in the arena to see how many waves you can complete will keep you coming back for more.
Thank you for your time, hope this review helps with your decision to buy the game. Take my word or don't take it, but this is a game you will be happy with purchasing.
AWESOME PLUS I MADE UP MY OWN LITTLE CHEAT! July 20, 2010 Mama (NJ) An overall awesome game, i used to play it everyday, and sometimes still do!
My little cheat that i made up myself:
Once you've completed the game (the entire game, legendary too), what you do is
1. get this list and print it out: [...]
2. choose an item on the list that sounds cool to you, for example, a mummy tongue.
3. find the 1st or 2nd highest versions of each (2nd highest also because for some reason for some upgrades i can never find the highest one only the 2nd highest)
4. start a new game on legendary, and import your character which you have already beat the game with (hopefully he/she/it is level 80)
5. find the upgrade that you chose before; make sure that you are killing the right things to get it, or else you're just wasting your own time.
6. Once you've gotten ONE, gate back to Natasla/Firionia, take of one of the pieces of armor from your character, REMEMBER WHAT IT IS, and save your game.
7. start a TWO, THREE OR FOUR PLAYER (Better if you use 4 player, dont have to though)new game on whatever diffuculty you want (preferably something high, i usually go with legendary)
8. import (for all two, three, or four players) the character from step 6, make sure you remember what piece of armor you took off! that is the distinction between your step 6 character and your character when you beat the game.
9. Choose one of the characters in your new game to be the "awesome guy"
10. Enter the inventory/ies of the other character(s)
11. Drop the item you chose from step 2 from every character but the "awesome guy"
12. Have him pick them (the item(s)) up
12 A. If you want to also get a lot of money, have the "non-awesome guy characters" drop the rest of their stuff, too, so the "awesome guy" can sell them in shop
12 B. If you want him/her to have even more money, buy as many expensive things as you can in shop with the "non-awesome" (thats why before i said i usually put it on legendary because the things there are really expensive and sell for a lot)
13. Repeat steps 7-12 as many times as you want!! Just think, soon you'll have 1,204 charged storm shards, just like me!!
PS If you found this cheat somewhere else on the internet, just not that i DID NOT copy this cheat from anywhere else, i made it up myself
I've seen worse games March 25, 2010 Chris You choose a character from the start and you'll be stuck with him or her throughout the entire quest. Other than that, the gameplay is very similar to Gauntlet Dark Legacy in a sense that you mostly run around killing weaker adversaries. I agree with another user that Champions Return to Arms gets rather redundant after a while. Throughout the journey, you unlock newer weapons and armor. The problem is, they just recycle the same designs over and over again therefore greatly reducing the excitement of upgrading your warrior. On the positive side, the game retained my interest long enough for me to beat it. For that, I consider this a worth while purchase.
Great dungeon crawler! March 21, 2010 Aaron (Arizona) Being a fan of Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 for years and years now, and the dungeon crawler genre in general, I was excited about picking this game up.
It is indeed similar to the first Champions of Norrath, but that was a great game, why change what isn't broken? with that mentality, this game is amazing.
Let's face it, most of us dungeon crawler fans don't play for the story, we play for upgrades and levels. This game has thousands of weapons, armors, potions, scrolls, charms, jewelry and other nice shiny little things we love to find so very very much.
The leveling system is also done well, and each class has a unique skill tree to develop. It all works nicely and rolls together to create a great dungeon crawling experience.
The levels are basically the same as the first game, enemies included, but the layout is different. Now the levels are set up into seperate "planes" like The Plane of Water, for example. Still a blast to explore and treasure hunt through though.
The sound is the games weakest quality, but you wont care about the sound when you find that awesome new flaming sword huh? yeah me neither.
Bottom line, if you're a fan of Diablo games or dungeon crawling in general, you NEED this game. Bottom line.
A good attempt September 13, 2009 Laura Steiner (Michigan) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Champions of Norrath was wonderful, so the bar was set high for this hack-n-slash game. The storyline seemed a bit sad; the writers probably cobbled it together overnight. Not too much of a problem, since by the 2nd or third time through the game you're cutting the cut scenes anyways. Being able to choose Good vs. Evil is always fun, except for it really didn't seem to make that much of a difference. Every boss can essentially one-hit-kill you, so get ready to run like hell.
GAME GLITCHES
Watch out, there's a lot of them. Most can be fixed by reloading an area, but some are tricky (the ones where you need to collect all 11 of something, etc.).
Some side challenges will make you want to rip your hair out, while others will be laughably easy. All of them leading up to a sword that really isn't all that exciting.
I miss being able to import characters into the middle of a game. This game auto-saves your progress through the levels, so that when you start a new game at the same level(legendary, champion, etc) you have trouble remembering where you've been and it messes up the story-line.
The arena and survival mode really aren't that fun unless you're online and taking bets. If you kept the exp and loot, that'd be another story.
