| Customer Reviews: Can't touch SO2 June 13, 2010 S. Bavik 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I remember getting this game, I was rather excited because I loved playing Star Ocean 2 when I was younger. After completing this, I'm afraid to buy another Star Ocean game. There are many reasons why i hate this game. Some SPOILERS.
#1 Fury. Every time I attack, I lose Fury and have to rest after a while, enemies don't have to rest. Doesn't exist in SO2.
#2 MP Death. Great, now I die for using spells. Not the case in SO2
#3 Allied AI. Let's attack the Final Boss during his unstoppable radiation attack
#4 Shields. Let's make the enemy be able to block attacks and heal himself at the same time.
#5 Gun Enemies. I just hate these guys. Being juggled to death by people I can't run up and hit.
#6 Crafting. Go to a workstation, shell out 50000 Fol to make an "Repulsive Lump". Great. In SO2 you can craft anywhere, and only pay for materials(50-500).
#7 Opening Cinematic. SPOILER. See how cool Future Earth is? You never go there. SO2 does something similar but doesn't focus on it as much.
#8 LOOOONG opening sequence. Introduces you to characters you won't see for the better part of the game and forces you to talk about nothing for almost an hour before getting to the first planet.
#9 The First planet. Completely pointless and could have skipped to the main planet.
# 10 Battle trophies. Nearly useless and takes up too much memory.
#11 Plot twist. SPOILER. The Matrix, anyone?
# 12 Special attacks. Doing a strong special attack can cost 1000/3000 hp to do about twice that in damage. A boss has around 10 times your health. Specials use Mp in SO2.
#13 Bonus Bar. I'll admit it's a nice Idea but it's tedious in practice.
#14 Backtracking. You have to go everywhere at least twice especially if it's on the other side of the planet.
#15 Greeton. SPOILER. A land slightly ahead of our current technology. You never go there. Even after you get a SPACESHIP.
#16 Characters. Cliches, annoyances and Mr. Super Square, Champion of the UP3. SO2 characters were cliched but not too annoying.
#17 Pointless Filler. SPOILER. Follow the girl with the same character model as Sophia, or the whole Dragon Cannon waste.
#18 Lack Of planets. SPOILER. There are 4 planets to visit 3 of them are very small and 1 is filled with backtracking. Maybe there could be a lot less backtracking and a whole other planet instead. Not such a problem in SO2 because you lacked a SPACESHIP.
#19 Ending. SPOILER. Similar to final fantasy 8, the universe is saved because people really believed in the power of love and friendship.
#20 Character restrictions. unlike in SO2 you only get 3 people per fight. This makes battles all the more difficult.
I could probably add more but i think 20 is enough. If you want a good RPG that's similar to SO2 get Radiata Stories. Just don't waste your money.
Lacks emotional draw March 29, 2010 Jacob E. Mcculley (Everett, WA USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The story line is good, but the emotional aspect of the character's interaction between each other fails to grab me -the timing of people's deaths, the lack of, or almost complete absence of any love story.
Game makes you jump through silly hoops like searching the entire planet to find some random person you have to talk with to make the story advance.
I guess there are different endings you can get once you beat the game but mine kinda sucked lol. Maybe others are better?
Also I think the dungeons you can do after you beat the game are just a bit too hard. I maxed out the attacks for my characters with ultimate weapons, got to level 200 and couldn't even come close to beating lenneth in sphere 211 who was still able to kill one of my characters in a single attack.
Over-all the game is still fun and has a decent story line.
Pros:
Good battle system
Cool storyline
No random fights
Good game options (custom contols, multiple difficulty levels)
Additional sidequests after beating game
Cons:
Weak ending
Can only fight with 3 characters at a time
Game makes you jump through silly hoops
First disc has way too many videos/not enough game play
only 2 video sequences with good graphics

I've been playin games all kinds for 17 years i'm 26 now will soon to be and i had to come reviem a few games that have been great games over the years i've played and some people sayin its hard w/e to newbies that r lazy on to figure out how the game goes dont get me wrong i had trouble and the invitin stuff is a like ggggggrrrrrrrr but its so worth playin i've played this game over 10x and still find it fun to play though the story line was in some lackin badly to me changin up on what it wanted to be and end >_< so many questions unanswered but when i finsh i didnt really get mad to tell u the truth just like w/e wasnt carin on the story anyways really i was havin that much fun with this game which i'm all about the story really in all games yeah i'm a FF FAN but i like some fresh stuff every now and then somethin that makes me want to play a game not know the story of it so this game has like a few small flaws that make u go gggggggggrrrrrrrrrrr at first but in the end of gettin the hang of it, its like O_O wow. but any ways people dont jugde be other people rent or borrow it from someone and give it time its time we r rpg GAMERS like in rpg cuz it takes a long time to finish a game which thats what RPG is one thing famous for the play time =p ok thats it laters =D

Plenty of customization
GREAT Story (some hate it, some love it)
Fun Item Creation
CONS:
Voicework may be decent, but that doesn't mean it isn't annoying sometimes
