| Customer Reviews: The Ultimate Star Wars Arcade August 9, 2010 A. Bush (Newberg, OR USA) Do you enjoy Star Wars, but not enough to fill a bookshelf with trivia books?
Do you like blasting people with lasers?
Has the thought of running someone over with a hovercraft/dirtbike ever amused you?
Do you enjoy the idea of single-handedly killing an entire enemy force by carrying out epic acts of marksmanship, tucking and rolling, and darting from one hiding spot to the next, all the while looking like the most awesome hero ever?
Do you like playing an FPS online with a total of 7 other people, all of whom have hacked their system to allow them to simultaneously fly, collect gold coins, and unleash a pack of trained velociraptors on you? Or, alternatively, do you prefer to play games in single player mode?
Do you like to exploit hilarious game glitches once the novelty of playing by the rules wears thin?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then Star Wars Battlefront should be a no-brainer for you. At this point in time, it's an OLD game, so although the statement about the online mode is only slightly exaggerated, you can easily pick this up on the cheap and get a very solid game to revert to when the latest graphically scintillating immersive title finally gets too tedious.
Think of this as the "Burnout" of FPS games. We're not about ultra-realistic physics, textures, and gore here. In fact, there is no gore, unless the sight of a battle droid exploding into pieces makes you queasy. Star Wars Battlefront is a simple, but ingeniously designed game that sets up perfectly for fun, challenging battles lasting about 20 minutes each.
Yes, SWB includes a couple of other modes. There is the online mode, which I've played once...everyone was hacking...and to be honest I'm a single-player guy myself so my reviews reflect those game modes. There is a campaign, which takes you through various battles in the Star Wars saga, and there is Galactic Conquest, which is a fun change of pace that makes the outcome of each battle a little more important on the whole.
Without doubt, however, the Instant Action mode is where it's at. Make a playlist of maps on which you'd like to fight, pick your faction, and choose from a variety of soldier types (infantry, sniper, etc.) with which to combat your foes. Once on the battlefield, you can run from place to place, gunning down enemies as you go, or you can choose from (depending on the map), various classic Star Wars vehicles, each with its own characteristics and weapons. The basic point of Instant Action is to capture "command posts" which serve as enemy spawn points. If one side holds a majority of the CP's, the other side's number of available respawns (or reinforcements) will decrease, until only the existing soldiers remain to fight to the death. Sometimes, this will happen to you, and with some sweet moves, you can turn the tide and win the battle.
Technical details aside, SWB is just plain fun. The game is easy to jump into and it's one of those titles that will yield dozens of "epic" or "hilarious" moments as the AI pull ridiculous moves, seemingly impossible feats take place, and glitches become obvious.
Ah yes, the glitches. I would honestly say that the little details the designers overlooked are probably the best part of the game. Examples include the following:
-Fly to the top of a rock on Tatooine and snipe people in complete safety...until your spacecraft spontaneously explodes and strands you.
-Stand directly in front of a droideka to prevent it being able to shoot you, then push it off a ledge to its death.
-Watch the elderly Count Dooku swat at you clumsily with his lightsaber, missing you while accidentally destroying several enemy droids, and in turn earning the "Traitor" award...with 7 counts of lethal friendly fire.
Seriously, this game is hilariously awesome. If you turn the difficulty all the way up, it is an insane challenge that requires an intimate knowledge of the game's foibles and a crafty strategy. Put it on an easier setting, and enjoy casual but fun battles that can be carried out while eating pizza with your friends. It may be an older game with glitches and a less than great online mode, but for a single player arcade-style FPS/TPS, it is rock solid.
Star Wars Battlefront March 5, 2010 Virginia L. Chapman 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I ordered this game for my grandson. It is the first time I ever ordered a used game but the description said it was in like new condition. Well the game freezes up when he tries to play it and I no longer have the receipt to return it. I am very disappointed and will not order used merchandise again.
Not as good as the seconed one. July 8, 2009 M. King This is the first one to come out and i like the seconed one allot better. First of all the graphics are not good and the sound is scatchy. Like other star wars games it is hard and confusing and since the graphics are bad it makes it glitch up really bad. Sometimes the game freezes so you have to restart the game all over again because you did not get to save. Like the newer one the quick battle is sort of fun but not as good as the newer one. I like to play it on multiplayer because it gives you someone to talk to and actually have a chance to beat. This would be a great game if the graphics were not so bad and if it was not as hard. Sorry for the negitive review but this game was not good for me because it was old and used and thats why it doesnt work so good, and it is pretty funny sometimes to hear and watch the glitches.....This game is also great online too and you can make a completly custom multiplayer game by yourself or with partners offline....Has a pretty good story mode, "just ignore what i said above becasue i have not played the game around the time i made this review" but a very hard storyline. So if you do have many friends that play with you on this offline or on, it is great....
Fun for Star Wars Fans... Other People- Maybe. April 2, 2009 Buzz I love the game- but I'm not gonna lie, I know people who don't.
Very Few People.
A lot of ways to play each level- make the Rebels win the battle of Hoth, make the Republic lose the battle of Geonosis.
Choose between Empire, Rebels, CIS(Droids) and the Republic.
Each Side has Four Units, plus one limited to that faction. (Republic has Jet Trooper ex.)
Galactic conquest- Choose an Era- Choose a Faction- Choose a Planet to attack.
Historical mode let's you be the Trade Federation in the battle of Naboo ex. One mode for each era.
But Compared to the sequel, this one has it's Dark Side.
Controls are different, not allowing you to sprint- but letting you lay flat on the ground with two taps of the O botton. (If it's on a Playstation 2) No limit to how many of one unit you can have in the field. ( These things can be good or bad. About unit limit, it can be frustrating- to say the least- when you, a clone trooper in the wide open plains of Geonosis, have four or five Droideka's (rolly droids, destroyer droids) unfold on you and put on their shields. But then put yourself in the Droideka's place- Really Cool.
Lack a sixth unit that the second one has.
No space battles. :(
Historical campain- not like Rise Of the Empire at all- no objectives, just normal play.
All in all, it's a bit harder than number two.- so for those of you just getting on the BF Express- Get the second one (Perferably on X-Box, ya get four players, which is not on the first). For those who liked the second one so much you want to get the first, Wait 'till your at least close to getting all the medals on Legendary- then buy it. Oh ya, you should know that there's ships in ground levels too. (X wing, Y wing, Rebels- Jedi Starfighter, LAAT Gunship, Republic ex.)
